Botanical and geotechnical characteristics of blanket peat at three Irish bogflows

چکیده
The potential importance of botanical controls on the properties and behaviour blanket peat involved in landslides was identified almost twenty years ago. During 2010–2012, investigations at three bogflows north-west Ireland were done with aim establishing some form relationship between or palaeoecological characteristics standard physical geotechnical properties, assuming latter to be meaningful but recognising that this may not case. In situ measurements all sites followed by extensive laboratory characterisation small core, block monolith samples. composition could fully determined due high degree decomposition. However, analysis macrofossils allowed distinct depth-related patterns several key indicators determined. particular, monocotyledon fragments, dominated Eriophorum vaginatum, showed potentially useful distributions throughout profiles. Overall results basal one site discernibly different from other two sites, having fewer monocotyledons, fibres, higher dry bulk density saturated hydraulic conductivity. This approach therefore offers a basis for developing means assessing mass auger

Runoff production in blanket peat covered catchments
[1] Blanket peat catchments exhibit flashy regimes, but little is known about the exact nature of runoff production processes within these catchments. Catchment, hillslope, and plot-scale monitoring results are presented from the blanket peats of the northern Pennines, United Kingdom. Catchment efficiency for three study catchments with areas of 11.4 km, 0.83 km, and 0.44 km were 72%, 77%, and ...
متن کاملHydraulic conductivity in upland blanket peat: measurement and variability
A key parameter used in wetland hydrological and landform development models is hydraulic conductivity. Head recovery tests are often used to measure hydraulic conductivity, but the calculation techniques are usually confined to rigid soil theory. This is despite reports demonstrating the misapplication of rigid soil theory to non-rigid soils such as peats. Although values of hydraulic conducti...
متن کاملControls of soil pipe frequency in upland blanket peat
[1] Soil pipes were surveyed in 160 British blanket peat catchments using consistent application of ground-penetrating radar. Soil pipes were found in all catchments. The mean frequency of piping was 69 per kilometer of surveyed transect. Land management (moorland gripping) appears to exert the most important control on hillslope pipe frequency in blanket peats. Management practice in peatlands...

The relationship between biogeochemical process rates and microbial functional activity was investigated by analysis of the transcriptional dynamics of the key functional genes for methanogenesis (methyl coenzyme M reductase; mcrA) and methane oxidation (particulate methane monooxygenase; pmoA) and in situ methane flux at two peat soil field sites with contrasting net methane-emitting and -oxid...
متن کاملPermeability Characteristics of Compacted and Stabilized Clay with Cement, Peat Ash and Silica Sand
The present paper investigates the influence of stabilization with cement, peat ash, and silica sand on permeability coefficient (kv) of compacted clay, using a novel approach to stabilize the clay with peat ash as a supplementary material of cement in the compacted and stabilized soil. In order to assess the mentioned influence, test specimens of both untreated and stabilized soil have been te...
